What are Corns and Calluses?
Corns and calluses are developed under the foot where the skin becomes thickened as a result of repeated pressure or friction. They are often mistaken for each other but have different characteristics:
Corns are small, circular, and typically painful areas of thick skin that usually form on the metatarsals, toes or other bony parts of the foot. They often have a hard centre surrounded by inflamed skin.
Calluses are larger, less defined areas of thickened skin that usually form on the soles of the feet. They are generally not painful and serve as a protective mechanism for the skin.
Causes
Both corns and calluses develop due to repeated pressure or friction. Common causes include:
Altered foot mechanics during physical activities
Ill-fitting Shoes: Tight shoes or high heels can compress certain parts of the foot, leading to corns, while loose shoes may cause friction, resulting in calluses.
Walking or Running: Prolonged walking or running, especially on hard uneven surfaces, can lead to the formation of calluses.
Foot Deformities: Conditions like hammertoe or bunions can create pressure points on the foot that lead to corn development.
Treatment
Proper Footwear: Wear well-fitting shoes with adequate cushioning and support. Avoid high heels or shoes with narrow toe boxes.
Medical Pedicure: A Podiatrist or a medical pedicurist may trim away excess skin using sterile instruments. This should not be attempted at home to avoid infection.
Regular Foot Care: Keep feet clean and moisturized, and regularly trim toenails to prevent pressure against shoes.
Orthotic Devices: Custom shoe inserts can alleviate pressure on specific areas of the feet, reducing the risk of corns and calluses. Wearing Orthotic insoles and footwear, off loading the weight on the corn and calluses
